Dating Tip: Take it in Stride

Friday, July 3rd, 2009 | Relationships | No Comments

Even the most experienced dater could use a good dating tip. Gaining experience and becoming better at dating is a bit like getting good at job interviews. The experience can be a little rough at first and your nerves might really get the better of you.  Eventually, you’ll learn to hone your technique, think on your feet, enjoy the challenge, find the humor in the situation, handle your nerves, relax and put your best foot forward.

Tip: Check your expectations at the door.
Not only will they stress you out but who on earth could live up to them? No one could pass that kind of scrutiny. Be on the date for the right reasons–not to meet some sort of goal.

How can you ever form a lasting relationship with someone if you are too busy being disappointed because they aren’t “perfect”? Relationships take time to develop and love rarely, if ever, occurs “at first sight”.

Tip: Let yourself enjoy the experience of meeting new people.
Find out about them, peer into their worlds and learn what makes them who they are. Broaden your horizons. Learn from these new people.

If you date someone you decide you don’t like or even if the date was awkward there may be a great, even humorous, story to tell your friends later. Don’t be so serious about dating that you miss the opportunities to laugh–at the situation and at yourself.

Tip: Put the pursuit of marriage on the back burner.
Being desperate to find “the one” will make you look just that – desperate.  Don’t measure someone’s viability for a second date on the criteria of whether or not they might be “the one” – judge that by whether or not you enjoyed the time you spent with them. If you feel like you can relax and be yourself with this person, then that’s someone who’s worth dating.
